OMG I'm 201 lbs!! Yes! Yes!Yes!

Okay. To put this in perspective I was 216 on June 1st. I had been working out for a month and hadn't lost weight, but gained muscle. Well, it's Sept. 20 and I'm now 201!!!!! I lost 15 lbs over the summer and have become a vegetarian. I was 30% body fat when I started, so I can't wait to see if that has changed. In 2009 I weighed my lowest weight which was 184, but I had been sick. I got up to 220 lbs this spring and I was over that quick! I promised that I would never get over 200 again after I lost it the first time. I'm so glad I'm almost over that hump. Workouts have been sporadic because I've been super busy (Thank you goddess!) I went on a 10 mile bike ride on Sunday with my buddy Bianca from detox class, it felt great. It had been so long since I'd done a spontaneous long bike ride. Love, love, loved it. It's important I stay on a physical journey. That is why I decided to attempt American Ninja Warrior's first level. It's crazy talk, ...

Back in Cali

It's good to be home. It was great to see everyone in Texas. It's been 4 years since I was back and 8 years since I spent enough time to see everyone. I hadn't even realized it's been so long. Fort Worth is no longer my city. Places have changed; buildings have been torn down, gutted or renovated. I didn't feel like I was home until I went by Fantasy Imports, a head shop I worked at in my 20s. Sarah was still there. I told her she looked good, she laughed at me and said she gained 80lbs. She looked the same, just puffier. I felt bad for her. She had left and ended up coming back. There are no benefits for her, and she works six days a week. She hates it there. She told me. It was a very intense moment of revelation. There but for fortune go I. I had that sense of the path not taken many times that week as I visited my childhood friends and haunts. My best gay boyfriend, James, met me at DFW. He brought his leather daddy, Kent. I fell in love with him,...

Learning at High Speed

I'm going nuts trying to learn how to edit and post my high school reunion video. I gave myself 3 hours on Tuesday to do it, and it's taken three bloody days to do!! Well, at least I've got a working knowledge of the camera now.

Aaaaaaaaaaah, home. I love the LBC

OMG. It was hot

Dallas Bound

7/20 Dallas bound. I was waiting in the security TSA line and was struck by a definite feeling of 1984. A young pregnant Persian woman in a head scarf smiled when my eye caught hers. We silently acknowledged the awkwardness of standing on blue boxes with our arms raised. When I glanced outside, I saw the silver fuselages of the AA planes. I miss being excited about flying. My grandfather flew for American Airlines. I had the little silver plane, and plastic gold wings for being a “brave flyer” as a child. I remember dressing up, being consciously polite (a stretch for an avowed tomboy), and feeling part of an amazing moment. Now, I just feel weird, like I’m part of some bizarre square dance set to banal elevator music. Now, I’m hoping I don’t lose my seat to an oversold flight. Pah! I am on vacation. I am releasing my need to be in control. My bags are checked, 9am flight, I gonna be high as a kite by then….(Sorry. Rocket man a la Capt. Kirk just flashed by:o) My bestie, James is poise...

A new day

A white virgin stands facing the ocean, her hands pressed together in prayer, while two acolytes clasp each other in frozen joy. A third acolyte takes the picture. The blood red carnations draped over the virgin's praying hands are bright splots of color against a white robe backed by a white seashell. She stared out to sea when it was nunnery, and now she stands before a Buddhist Monastery with same serene gaze taking in the whole of the western seaboard. I drove past her at lunch to go to my detox class. I was struck by all the mini vignettes framing themselves around me. The yoga class on the bluff lying in corpse pose while an oblivious jogger picks her way through the bodies, chatting on her phone. The two women riding their bikes toward the beach, wearing big floppy sun hats and laughing joyfully at the sunshine. I love Long Beach. There is such a sense of community. We really felt it last night on the beach. It was a good weekend. We had an awesome time on the 4th. We hung o...

Death and faxes

Wow...just wow. What a long week. Scott and I got nailed Saturday night on our way home. We're okay but the insurance is talking totaled. It was only like 10mph, but she tagged us right on the front tire at the perfect angle to bend our axle. I was really wrecked over it (snort) but considering how many people die in LA in traffic accidents I'm lucky to get off this light. It helps to think of that. I've been faxing receipts, and dealing with the collision place. :o( Kirsten's other cat just died tonight, almost exactly a year after her other cat died. It was awful. It was a hit and run. The neighbor told me, so I called Pete to ask him how to tell her. She pulled in the driveway right as we were discussing it. She collapsed and wept. I felt so terrible for her. It's been a hard month for all of us in the compound. Thank God we have each other to lean on. It's a tight little group back here. We've all been super busy, but we always stop to comfort each other...

Birthday Bash

Well, I got into the first wreck I've had in eight years last night. Scott and I were leaving my friend Liz's birthday party (which was awesome!)and got nailed by this girl making an unprotected left at Nutwood and Chapman. She begged us to not call the cops, and promised to pay for the damage, please don't call insurance, blah blah blah. I felt bad for her because she was just a kid. Yeah I know that your 20s are an adult, but you are pretty damn stupid for the first part of them. We should have called the cops, but I just never feel that it's a good idea to call the cops. If someone's been shot or killed, okay cops, but little shit isn't worth calling the po-po. I guess I've read 1984 one time to many. We got towed by this cute guy named Tova. He had an accent I couldn't place. I thought it was Russian. Get this, he's Israeli. I would have never guessed. I know it is stupid, but I always thought they'd sound like New Yorkers, or Eastern Europea...

Cleanse

Okay, after I finish the big rant on Scott and how I feel like he is nodding out on our lives. I was actually worried about posting it. It felt like a little too much like airing dirty laundry. (BTW has anybody thought about what airing your family's dirty laundry would look like? Does that mean there are underwear with poop stains flapping happily on the clothesline) Anyway, the next morning after playing with all the musicians, he decided he is ready to start applying for Masters Degrees again. He's been re-inspired. I'm excited that we are getting back on the road of achieving our goals together. He has also agreed to do a cleanse with me. I'm doing my friend's Teresa's detox class. We are using Arbonne protein drinks, and a vegan diet. I've lost five pounds!! I'm still working out, but I am definitely at half speed. I must have been really gunked up. I'm glad I'm working this out of my body. I did yoga this morning, Shultz came with. Everyon...

Nonstop action and the art of sitting still

Scott went to his lead singer's birthday at Di Piazzas and they ended up playing a few sets with other band members that showed up. I went up to the club to watch him. It was awesome to see my Jimi Hendrix again. Scott hasn't played in forever. It's so hard to be a partner when your sweetie just decides to check out for, oh say about three years! It has been one thing after another. His mom died, he finished college, he quit playing music, he quit going out except to work or go to his sister's house to play D&D with the same guys he has played with since high school, and he has not got a new job, the one he has is contract part-time work. All he wants to do is play that stupid Final Fantasy game. He won't step away from it when they are on a "quest". I'll ask for help or ask him to come to the store with me and he'll tell me he can't because "People are depending on me. They're waiting on me. I'm in the middle of something......

OMG Wahoo Ninja Warrior! What a week!!

Image
Guess what I did this week??!! Apart from skipping yoga aaaaand almost every one of my badass workouts, I'm going tonight, but I feel like scum missing it all week. I went to AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR!!!!!!!!AAAAAghhh! It was cold and rainy, the people around me were screaming "You Suck!", to everyone that fell (which was all but two of the competitors that ran it, and no one wanted to come with me. Wa! But I had fun.) I ended up standing in line with the competitors. I was an hour late because of traffic, which meant an hour less of standing in the rainy cold. I realized something was off when I noticed everyone around me was a guy and they were all cut like madmen. I asked "Is this the audience line?" The guy next to me was dressed in camo and was wearing a bandanna over his face. He pulled down the bandanna and grinned. "This is the competitor's line. You want to compete." I told them I'd compete if they wanted someone to face plant on the cou...

Finally! Two seconds to blog

Image
Hi ya'll, 1st picture random dog beach sunset, because everyone needs a random moment of beauty. 2nd picture is the massive bruise I got while working out. We had to jump up and slap both knees at the same time. Yes I did almost face plant every time, thanks for asking. Notice it is in the shape of my hand. Scott was horrified. LOL I was going to blog on Wednesday, and my world just kind of snowballed into stuff to do! I'm trying to get myself ready to go rock the Spa Sidney booth at roller derby tonight. I'm determined to watch the second half. I missed the game last time. Alexis and I were just too cashed from volunteering to stay any longer. I promised myself I'd get a beer and French fries and just sit and watch the game in peace, sometime tonight. Speaking of health food:o)LOL My friend Teresa is offering a detox nutrition class on Tuesdays that I want to go to. Here are the details: When? Beginning June 7th, Tuesdays 12:00-1:00pm Where? 100 Oceangate, 12...

Wow, what a week.

Image
I have been trying to make it to workout, but I 've had different stuff come up. I don't feel bad though. I hit yoga 3 times this week. Tuesday, Josh was trying to pack his 2 person kayak on a trailer and pull it with motorcycle. I impulsively decided that I would go with him. We packed up the truck, and drove down Ocean behind the handball courts on Bay shore Dr. Day 1 I was amazed by how good I felt while paddling. Usually, my right forearm squeaks in pain. We set a good pace, drank a lot of water, and totally lucked into being the first of the season allowed into the bird sanctuary. The nature guys were hauling back the floating gate to the bird sanctuary. The water was really low, but the water was clear. We brought a picnic lunch. We sank our paddles in the mud and hooked them on our boat. We floated and watched the birds. It was an amazing moment. We paddled like mad to get back but we didn't get back until 5pm. After we got home, I showered. I was soooo sun baked, a...

Ow, Ow, Ow

OMG Everything hurts. I can't believe I got a 90 minute massage yesterday. I want to just sit in a hot bath. I did yoga the past 3 days. And I did workout on Mon, Wed, and Thurs. God, I can't believe I had trouble remembering which days I worked out. The past three days have been a bit of a blur. Which is a blessing, since I quit smoking Tuesday morning. I haven't wanted to kill anybody, but I have been eating like I'm going to the chair. I made yellowcake and caramel icing yesterday because I was too embarrassed to go to Frosted Cupcakery for the third day in a row to buy the salted caramel hi-tops (mini cupcakes) I was getting like 2 a day. I guess the whole smoking oral obsession thing is kicking in. It's better than sex & gambling as an addiction, at least it's cheaper. Yesterday, I had nothing left to give for that extra push. Kim said she was watching us, and we were all doing as well as we always do. Liz and I both said we could barely move, like we w...

Hello, Luci Romberg! The Real 1st Woman of ANW

Shit, shit, shit. The number one thing you learn in journalism is to check your facts! I checked women cross-referenced with ANW. And lo and behold Ms Luci Romberg appears. What is worse is I REMEMBER her taking on the SPider Jump in Japan. So I prostrate myself before the Gods of facts and prepare myself for scathing ridicule. But, I am not discouraged or overly bummed. SO WHAT! So what if I'm not the first to do it. It is an interesting challenge.I just want to see if it is possible for me to take myself to the other extreme of healthy, where I know my body's range of motion and am able to achieve physical feats I previously couldn't do (ie... climb a freaking rope) I am so sore today. I skipped tonight, and I refuse to feel guilty. It's day two of moon time, I'm low iron, and I did yoga this morning. I'm actually listening to my body this time. My number one mistake is usually going great guns at something and then burning out within 3 months, so this time I...

3rd week of training

I've been toying with the idea of competeing in american ninja warrior to be the first woman to finish level one. I started training with the long Beach Roller Derby girls trainer, Kim Ball. I started about three weeks ago, after almost breaking my neck at a roller skating class. Well not my neck, more my wrists, but screw that! It's been interesting. I've had to go through some emotional moments right at the start. There is this little chubby kid (5 or 6) who hangs out around the bandshell a few days a week. He comes up and pokes me in the stomach and tells me, "You're too fat to do this." I wanted to push him down. Instead the only thing I could think of to say was "I'm not TOO fat for anything! I'm just fat." He shrugged and walked off. I wanted to kill him. It was my second class, and I was breathing like I was dying. Then some stray munchkin wanders up and shotguns my self-esteem. Mouths of babes and all. I brushed it off but it st...
