Going to War in flip flops

Scott left about 6:15am. I hunkered under the covers. I had got up with him at 5:45am and made his lunch and morning smoothie. I left HBO on. There was a doc called Witness: Sudan. I was sleepy but got sucked in. This photojournalist named Veronica V (some long ass french name I'm not going to bother to spell much less look up to spell it right) following "The Arrow Boys". Local self-formed militia in the Sudan and Uganda. (She visited two other places but damned if I can remember the names) They are hunting General Kony . Terrorist, murderer and kidnapper of children. Sidenote: BBC International news is on the TV. Reporter just said, "With 36 million of the world's inhabitants living in slavery, slavery is up a quarter from last year." *shiver* Sounds like a Wall Street quote. The DOW is up, slavery is up, and unemployment is down. Good news for investors. The economy is showing no signs of stopping this upward push. In fairness, it is an expose of li...

Well, shit.

My left hip was just starting to feel better, the last two days have been booked, and I was feeling good. Then I opened a drawer that had a broken cabinet door leaning against it. I yanked the drawer open to grab a brush that Vaness was lending me so I could tame the blah locks of my tempest tossed look. Enter door- stage left. It attacks my ring toe(next to pinky toe), and ker-aash! The door falls on my foor but miracously doesnt crush the rest of my foot. My ring toe is selflessly suffering for the whole foot. The bleeding, twice cursed, motherfucking knob on the door has landed squarely on my toe. Oh fudge. Only I didn't say fudge. I hopped up and down, spitting and hissing like a wet cat. Oooh I was mad. I flipped the cabinet off then turned to notice the two salon clients watching me anxiously. I slapped on huge grin and apologized before shuffling off to the massage room to curse and weep in privacy. I made it through the next two 90 minute massages. I went home after t...

These shelves lift out?! Sonofabitch!

I have been a total slug today! I've binge watched Eureka for past few days. Wednesday I cleaned out the fridge. It had become just horrid. How many kinds of mustard do we need? I threw away anything not in date, some sporting a 2011 stamp. Freakin eww! Then I decided to wipe down everything, because...well I never have. As I'm struggling with the meat drawer, it comes out. Now I had rattled wiggled and jabbed at the shelf below it while I scrubbed it. It never freaking budged. I almost fainted with self frustration, doing the next three shelves took less time than the one shelf and the door before. But I LOOOOOVE my clean fridge. It's so bright. I can see stuff. It's not cluttered. Nothing is gross. Makes me happy. Scott made his awesome turkey meatballs. I have red peppers, spinach, tomato and basil sauce on spinach fettuccine. I'm waiting for him to get back from band practice so we can nosh. I'm so proud that we've almost used up all the extra veg I bo...

Joyful Determination

I've done so many things in my life with grim determination. I've faced fears I didn't even know I was laboring under, I've whipped myself up mountains, and climbed out of deep holes. All with a fierce soul. I know I seem dippy and light hearted most times, but this runs completely against my original nature. I was bitter about my life, depressed by the world at large, angry at the limitations of my sex and size(a 300lb woman), oppressed by past mistakes and negative voices in my head, and ignorant of any way to be free of it. When I was 28 I left an abusive marriage. It changed who I was. I refused to suffer a small life lead by fear. I left the only state I'd ever known, and plunged into the cauldron of humanity that is Los Angeles. The past 13 years here have been a revelation of belief for me. When I arrived here, I was washed clean of a past. I was exactly what I decided I would be.  I found a job, my live-in became a spouse, we've been married 10 y...

The Normalizing of Evil

When I was in Texas, my dad and I had an interesting conversation about Maleficent. I had been dying to see it, and I wanted to take mom. We ended up not going. But I was surprised Dad didn't want to see it. He didn't agree with Hollywood's new take on stories these days. He resented them providing a backstory for evil characters. He maintains there is no justification for evil in mythos. It just is, there are no justifications for evil. It should be vanquished, not understood. I was conflicted with this view. On some level, I agree with him. In horror movies since the 90s, directors wedge backstories in to cast the villain in a sympathetic light, bad childhood etc. Dad says there are plenty of people with awful backstories that manage to lead fulfilliing kind lives, in fact they have been driven by the evil they experience to do good for others. He sees them as excuses not explanations. I see what he was saying. But it was a damn good movie. My friend Mary sent me NYTime...

Discarded Thoughts, Anxiety, and cupcakes

I haven't posted a blog in months. I have 3 or 4 crap blogs I left as drafts on my site. I didn't even finish my euro trip blogs and the details are foggy now. I've been so distracted by life. In good ways but still... I've started working out again, thank goddess. I've put on 15lbs in the last year. I was struggling to stay under 200 lbs two years ago. That is 30 lbs in the last two years. What the hell? I've been cycling through my different addictions, especially drinking for the past two years. Midlife crisis maybe? What I can't figure out is why just red wine? I leave a beer half drunk easily. But red wine I usually drain 3-6 glasses. I can do eight if I'm drinking from noon on. I don't drink it all in one go, but I'm drinking steady all day. Not good. I'm working on not drinking anything at all. Hell, I'd like to give up Diet Dr Pepper too. But I figure start small with the wine. The volume and frequency has worried me. I haven...

Part Three: Centraal Boat, ReichsMuseum, and the Death of Fleur

I forgot to clear up the cold shower thing in Utrecht. After we had threaded our way around the nearest canal, we found the coffee shop I had googled. I was so proud of us. We looked at the list of strains available, all of which we have seen at the clinics in California. I picked two that we have liked before. The guy brought out two baggies, and I did what I do with wine. I stuck it to my nose in and took a huge snorf. The one I ended up liking I passed to Scott over my shoulder, he leaned forward to sniff then nodded with a muttered, "nice." to indicate my choice was the best one. It always is, but I find it less bothersome if I least pretend to consult him on it. We made our completely unsurreptitious drug deal, clambered into the street and went to the grocery store for cheaper eats. I. Love. Foreign Groceries. Anywhere. I'll get lost in an Asian Grocery store in two seconds, we have tons in Long Beach. I love wandering leaning aisles piled high with what the owner...
